Deena Yako

Deena is a former Assyrian-Mandaean refugee born in Iraq. Deena is a refugee advocate who utilises her personal experience of surviving and thriving as a refugee in her work as an educator, practitioner, and inspiration. Having been directly involved in refugee resettlement and been a co-founder of a number of thriving programs, supporting refugee young people and their families. Deena is an active refugee advocate and has represented the Australian Iraqi community at NGO consultations at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva. She has been involved in various research projects specifically relating to refugee women and girls. Deena has also used her skills and experience in educating the Australian public about what it is to be a refugee. Deena is currently also working with the education program at the Refugee Council of Australia.
